How We Fix It
A dented or rusted-through panel doesn't always mean a new door. If the door is a standard raised-panel steel model, the kind that went up on most Taylor garages when these streets were built around 1963, we can often source a matching section and swap just that one panel without touching the rest of the door. We pull the damaged section, check the hinges and rollers on either side of it for wear, and set the replacement so the seams line up and the door still balances the same as before. If the track has bowed from the impact that caused the damage, we straighten or replace that section too, because a new panel on a bent track will bind again within weeks. We test the opener's force settings after any panel swap, since a door that's even slightly out of balance makes the opener work harder than it should.

On a house from the early 1960s the garage door is usually steel, sized for a single wide bay or a modest two-car opening, not the tall, wide doors builders use now. Panels on doors this age were often painted rather than factory-finished with a baked coat, so rust starts at dents and scratches and spreads under the paint before it shows through. You might see a bubble or a soft spot along the bottom panel where snowmelt sits against it, or a crease across a middle panel from a car bumper or a basketball. Sometimes the whole door still opens fine and only looks bad. Other times a bent panel is dragging on the track, and you can hear the opener strain before the door even moves.

We carry a range of standard steel panel sections and hardware sized for the door widths common on 1960s-era single and two-car garages, along with matching hinges, rollers, and track hardware. What we can't always carry is an exact color or panel-style match for an older or discontinued door line - if your door is a less common profile, we may need to order the section and come back for a second visit rather than finish the same day. We'll tell you up front if that's the case rather than force a mismatched panel onto the door. For steel doors in the sizes and styles that were standard when these Taylor neighborhoods were built, we usually carry what we need.
